HELP!!!!! Arthur…PLEASE help!!! Canon 100-400 ii modes questions abound and answers are cryptic. If I am using back button focus for flying birds left to right at eye level, should I: 1) use mode 3; and 2) keep the back button focus depressed constantly if set to High Speed Continuous shooting? Or a different mode or not continuously press the back button focus? No tripod in this scenario…and the bird is closest straight in front of me but further from left and further as it passed to right, light the bend of a river. Love your videos! thank you
I set both back buttons to af off using front focus. Pressing one of the back buttons for one shot . Releasing back button if my subject moves again. And continuing ai,servo .
This was a very helpful video..I am using the 5D Markiv…I have a question on the back button focus. I have always used that and I have always set the AF-on button to back button. I have now set that button and the AE-lock button to back button just has Arthur suggested but I am not sure I understand the difference. Should the AF on button be used only for tracking?
Wow. This is one of the most informative YT videos I've ever seen. It's a perfect bridge between my oldtimey film knowledge, and modern digital camera. I had dismissed back button focusing on my new, (first ever digital) Canon t5i, but will definitely use it. I don't like the fact that the exposure locks when the shutter is half pressed. It seems like this is a solution.
Mr. Morris, I am sure I will go over all the info once more, you are a great resource for a digital beginner in bird photography. One q: Settings, Standard, and you say leave it. Yet I could change the setting to my liking for the sake of my JPEG preferred image in camera, and that would not affect RAW if I shoot RAW plus JPEG? Or am I wrong here. Thank you!
Does the picture style effect whats being recorded as raw on canon camera's now ? I have always been under the impression that Raw is Raw and that none of these styles even B&W style has any effect on a Raw image so if you shoot Raw none of this effects you image surely it is only exposure triangle values that can effect the Raw image and not the styles at least with Sony Nikon this is the case
Thank you very much for this informative explanation. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to help us along. I'm so looking forward to trying these settings tomorrow as I venture back out to get some geese landing photos both on water and on cut corn fields.
Dear Mr. Morris, Thank you so much for the incredibly valuable tips. Really enjoyed the way you explain things. So many combinations of the camera body and lens settings I am a bit confused what settings I should have for fast moving jets. Would you say that 7D MK II is better than 5D MK II & MK III ? Best wishes.
I usually shoot wildlife in Av mode with AI Servo, Back button focus (* button ) on my 7DMII with 100-400 MII lens.
When the bird start from sitting position to flying, I wanted to use register recall sotting setting while being at Av mode for my BIF shot.settings which are set in Manual mode as 1/3000 sec, f5.6, auto ISO with expanded zone autofocus points.
In other words, when I don't have time to turn the dial to select one of the three custom settings, I can just push the AF-On button and instantly achieve the same thing on the fly. But the camera just don't allow this.
I register the settings while in Manual and then switch to Av mode. Once the settings are registered, they show up in the Register Recall settings menu, however, once I switch back to Av mode,Tv mode I loose the settings that I registered and it is grayed out in the Register Recal menu.
Am I misunderstanding the intent of Register Recall functions ? Is there any other way to achieve this ?
People do not seem to grasp that he uses a specific picture style because that picture style will load when you view the RAW file if you use Canon's software DPP Digital Photo Professional. SO the JPG preview on the camera will look like the final output minus minor tweaks to push saturation, contrast and sharpness etc.
Firstly, thank you for posting this informative video. I have a question about the tracking sensitivity. Why have you reduced it to minus? I thought more responsive would be better. Thank you in advance.
You mentioned depth-of-field isn't an issue in flight photography. Yet when shooting a Canon 7D Mark II 400mm f5.6 I noticed many times the head of an eagle or hawk is sharp but the wing or tail is blurry. Stopping down to f8 seemed to improve things, and f10 gives even more keepers, when shooting with a shutter speed of 1600-2000.
so pleased to stumble onto your tutorial vid, the only vid that ive came across with best explanation for bbaf & custom settings. many thanks for this, youre the best!✨???
At about 2:50 in the video, you use custom functions to set the * button to Meter/AF. Why did you do this when the AF-ON button is already set for this function? Now you have two buttons set for the same function (AF). I did change the shutter half-press to meter only, but use the AF-ON for BB AF. I then set the * button to AE-Lock (Hold)
Very helpful video. But I am having a problem with 7DII AND 100400 II lens where autofocus points fix on high contrast areas. For example dark wing edge and light sky in background or black / white feather variation on bird. This leaves face / eyes soft. Is there a trick I am missing?
How do you get such clear shots using the 2x extender when manual focus, I am going to Grand Teton/Yellowstone in 2 weeks, I will be using the 5Dsr with 800mm ………. https://www.flickr.com/photos/7733884@N03/

Too much button pressing. It's not how I roll.

Love the work! Keep grinding

Thank you so much, you explain things in a way I can follow and understand – cheers Anna – New Zealand (Canon 7d Mk2)

Step 1 is missing: Don't use a Canon camera because it does not have a silent shutter option.
very expensive
Awesome! Keep up the good work.

Love the video. Question… Why not using the AF-ON Button and preferring the * instead for back focus?
Firstly, thank you for posting this informative video. I have a question about the tracking sensitivity. Why have you reduced it to minus? I thought more responsive would be better.
Thank you in advance.
It would be useful to have a link to a pdf with the suggested settings listed.
if your shooting raw.. no need to worry about white balance or picture styles

So much to learn and so many people willing to share. Thanks a bunch!
how about using canon 550D for bird photography..is it possible?
I use the EOS 1DX for hobby. How the setting on the camera to the best bird photography?
Thank you.

Can you give ideas about best possible autofocus settings in CANON 80D,during birds in flight shot?
Thank you for this excellent tutorial.
Aaaaahhh! Is this guy a bd-asss, or is this just life as a Canon sponsered photographer?
Was this video done in Bosque ? If so can you let me know which time of the year was this video made. I wanted to know how it will in December end
You're awesome, thanks!
Why do you have camouflage on your camera and accessories, including tripod but wearing a bright red jacket. Isn't that defeating the purpose?
